Dorothy Jen Ng is a 3rd generation jeweller, gemmologist, and talented jewellery designer whose passion for customized jewellery and knowledge of gemstones were inherited from many generations of family heritage. Her childhood was spent watching her father working on the bench, handcrafting the finest jewelleries which sparked her obsession with gemstones.
She established Frou Frou Fine Jewellery in 2014 with the hope of tapping a younger market from that of her father, Jude, who runs a quaint little jewellery shop in Chulia Street in George Town, Penang. Pronounced "fru-fru", the name of her boutique translates to mean elaborate ornamentation in French. She established Frou Frou to instill the timeless beauty of European jewellery into the practicability of jewellery wearing for contemporary living which creates a sense of modern-day romance.
Her late grandfather, Martin, was a self-taught master craftsman of fine jewellery who made customized ornaments for other jewellers as well as a select clientele. His ardor for quality, elegance and craftsmanship was passed down to his children and grandchildren. Martin, who passed away six years ago, came to Malaya in the 1930s when he was still a teenager. He married early, as was the custom in those days, and found him with a young family to support. Motivated by the financial needs, he learned the craft on his own, starts selling it, and by 1950s, Martin's fame had spread where his clients included the Kedah Royal family. In 1974, the family moved to Penang where Martin's second son, Jude took up the craft and expanded it until Dorothy Jen started her own Frou Frou boutique.
