Ivan Alexander Francis Gabriel, or simply known as Ivan Gabriel is a multi-disciplinary artist who prides himself in being a teller of tales. He loves exploring different techniques and mediums not only as a way to stretch his artistic skills, but to also internalize these various techniques to build a more expansive visual vocabulary in his works. Whilst he uses a variety of different mediums and processes in each project, his methodology has always remained consistent.
Although there might not be material similarities between the different projects, they are linked by the recurring formal concerns and through the subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the works. Each project often consists of multiple works, often in a range of different mediums, grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and production, new areas of interest arise and lead to his next body of work.
He strives to present something that may or may not be familiar to the viewer. He wants the viewer to see his works as unfamiliar or foreign, so that they would question the environment around them, as well as to take their own visual journey through the details. He is, however, learning to be more direct and immediate in his works without being over-burdened by the technicality of his styles. Currently, he is trying to find a balance between his love for the Arts ( both performing and visual ).
